Earning points on orders made with a gift card
Digital orders made with a gift card earn loyalty points on the full order total, regardless of how the customer checks out, whether it’s credit card only, single gift card, multiple gift cards, or any split payment with a credit card.
What is it?
Previously, points earned on digital orders made with a gift card were inconsistent. Split payments earned points only on the credit-card portion, and multiple gift cards earned points only on the first card. That's no longer the case. When a guest checks out using a gift card, whether it's a single card, multiple cards, or a split between a gift card and a credit card, they earn points on the full digital order total.
For in-store orders via check-in model, guests earn loyalty points on the full order total paid by a gift card. For brands on the card-linked model, this remains unchanged. Guests do not earn points on any in-store orders paid by a gift card via the card-linked model.
Why it matters
Guests with gift cards are often high-intent buyers. Letting them earn points on purchases made with a gift card pulls them deeper into your loyalty program at exactly the right moment. Not earning full points on those orders causes friction for a guest when they're most ready to engage. This update helps close that gap so your loyalty experience works the way guests expect: earn every time, every way they pay.
How it works
Points are calculated on the full order total regardless of how the guest checks out: credit card only, a single gift card, multiple gift cards, or any combination. No action is required from your team. This applies across all integrated ordering providers, including Olo and Toast.
One thing to note: earning points for purchasing a gift card is unchanged. Because Thanx identifies guests based on how they pay, not what they buy, a guest who buys a gift card using a linked card, as a checked-in guest, or via a digital menu item will still earn points on that transaction as they do today.
