Thanx and Square Direct to POS Ordering

DATE:
AUTHOR: The Thanx team

Thanx now integrates directly with Square POS — adding to existing direct integrations with Toast and middleware partnerships with Deliverect, Onosys, and Olo. Thanx has tripled its ordering integration footprint in 2026, giving restaurants more choice in how they build their digital stack.

What is it?

Restaurants on Square can run ordering with Thanx directly against their POS — managing menu pricing, imagery, item availability, handoff modes, store hours, and operational config in a single source of truth. Available for merchants running Square as their POS.

Why it matters

  • Simplify menu and offer management: pricing, imagery, availability, handoff modes, and store hours all live in Square — one source of truth for your menu.

  • Reduce tech stack complexity and vendor costs: Maintain or upgrade your ordering experience without adding systems.

  • One payment processor with Square Payments: No need to separate payment processors for in-store and online. Square payments is supported for both.

How it works

For your guests:

  1. Guests log in with their existing Thanx account online or in app and order straight from the menu.

  2. Guests can order from your Square-synced menu, including time-of-day menus (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and day-of-week specials like a Taco Tuesday menu.

  3. Rewards apply automatically as discounts at checkout, and Thanx validates each order against your live Square menu, pricing, and availability — automatically guiding guests to the next available time or location if something's unavailable.

  4. Guests may choose pickup or delivery (via DoorDash or Uber Direct) and pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or gift card.

What's different on Square

A few things work differently than on other ordering integrations:

  • Menus: Pickup and Delivery draw from the same menu (no handoff-specific menus), and categories support only one level — subcategories flatten into their parent.

  • Handoff: Only Pickup and third-party Delivery (DoorDash, Uber Direct) are available — tableside, drive-thru, and curbside are not supported on Square.

  • Volume management: order throttling isn't available, and orders can't be cancelled through the integration — turn off online ordering directly in Square POS during peak periods, and cancel or refund orders directly in Square.

  • Payments and gift cards: Pay with cash or in-store, and splitting a payment across multiple cards or multiple gift cards are not available.

  • Not yet available: card-linked loyalty registration, Thanx Universal Promo Codes, group ordering, checkout upsell (static or AI-powered) and combos (a combo can be recreated as a single item with modifier choices).

FAQs

What pricing and modifier options are supported?

Item-based pricing, size-based pricing, nested modifiers, priced modifiers, and modifier images are supported, along with dynamic pricing by handoff mode. Size-based pricing for modifiers, category images, category descriptions, calories, dietary tags, and non-continuous daily hours are not available.

What happens when an item runs out?

Based on your Thanx dashboard settings, 86'd items and modifiers automatically hide or grey out in the ordering experience so guests can't order them.

Can guests schedule orders ahead of time?

Yes. Guests can place an order for a future time, and one-click reorder makes repeat ordering faster.

Are gift cards supported?

Yes, including gift cards stored on file (currently Valutec, with more providers planned). A guest can pay with one gift card and cover the remainder with one credit card; splitting across multiple gift cards or credit cards isn't supported.

Can catering brands use Square with Thanx?

Catering is limited to a separate menu category on Square — a full catering solution isn't available.

Do I need to change how I currently manage ordering to use this?

No. Running ordering directly against Square is an additional option, not a requirement — if you're already set up another way, that setup keeps working. This is available if you'd rather manage your menu and ordering in one place.

Are there other features that aren't available yet?

Group ordering, checkout upsell, and the utensils opt-in prompt aren't currently available on Square. Combos also aren't available — a combo needs to be built as a single item with the choices set up as modifiers.
